March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month

Prevent Blindness named March as Workplace Eye Wellness Month to raise awareness and share information to keep eyes healthy and safe at work.

Office eye health tips

Whether you are in an office or working remotely, digital eye strain is a common result of working with blue light devices. Symptoms of digital eye strain can include burning or itching eyes, dry eyes, blurry vision or headaches.

During Workplace Eye Wellness Month, employers and employees can readily find information about best practices for keeping their vision safe while on the job. Check out these tips for reducing the effects of digital eye strain:

  • Implement the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain. Look away from a screen and focus on something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
  • Change the lighting to lower glare or try a glare filter to reduce reflections.
  • Wear blue light-blocking glasses when using digital devices.
  • Anti-reflective lenses can also help reduce glare and increase contrast from screens.

Construction and manufacturing vision health tips

Do you work more of a hands-on and on-site construction or manufacturing job? Don’t be one of the 2,000 U.S. workers who sustain a job-related eye injury every day this Workplace Eye Wellness Month—follow the OSHA requirements. This includes wearing the provided eye and face protection when it’s necessary to protect against chemicals, environmental, radiological or mechanical hazards.

Your safety eyewear should include:

  • Non-prescription and prescription safety glasses
  • Goggles
  • Face shields
  • Welding helmets
  • Full-face respirators
