About Us
We proudly introduce Mississippi Eye Care Low Vision to the Mississippi Eye Care family! Created by our own Dr. Justin Zampella, whose passion for helping those with low vision maintain a high quality of life embodies the very mission of this new initiative.
Dr. Zampella’s commitment to low vision care is deeply personal. His wife, Maggie, was born with a rare retinal disease called retinitis pigmentosa. Her journey with vision loss and advocacy for others with low vision inspired his mission to empower others facing similar challenges.
Together, they have navigated the ups and downs of vision loss, and Maggie’s strength and resilience continue to motivate his work. Her courage and determination are at the heart of our patient-driven solutions, reminding us that independence is possible with support and the correct resources.

Mississippi Eye Care adds low vision treatment options
Mississippi Eye Care, a clinic located in Taylor, added Low Vision treatment to its roster earlier in June, attempting to help those who suffer from vision loss issues.
Low vision, a visual impairment that cannot be corrected with standard eyeglasses, contact lenses, or surgery, can happen for a variety of reasons, including macular degeneration – a progressive eye disease that damages the macula, the central part of the retina; glaucoma; diabetic retinopathy, among others.
Dr. Justin Zampella has been working at the clinic since 2017.
His connection to low vision treatment is deeply personal. His wife, Maggie, has a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa, which causes progressive vision loss. Her experience has inspired her to become an advocate for others living with low vision.
Zampella said that treating low vision patients is completely different from treating other patients with retinal issues. He said his wife’s journey has helped create a new path for his clinic to offer other low vision patients the help they need.
“In our kind of personal journey, we had to pave our own path,” he said. “We thought, maybe we should be making this model for our patients who might need these same services. And so that was the inspiration.”

What is Low Vision?
Low vision is a visual impairment that cannot be corrected with standard eyeglasses, contact lenses or surgery. It can affect daily activities, such as reading, driving or watching TV.
Low vision is most commonly the result of eye conditions like:
- Macular Degeneration
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic Retinopathy
- It can also be caused by inherited diseases, strokes or eye injuries.
What to Expect During a Visit
During your visit, Dr. Zampella and his team will conduct a comprehensive low-vision eye exam. They will assess your vision and discuss your specific challenges. This patient-centered approach focuses on understanding each individual’s unique visual needs and goals.
From there, personalized solutions will be tailor-made to maximize each patient’s remaining vision.
Types of Solutions
After we understand your specific visual goals and daily challenges, we’ll explore tools and strategies that can help you do more of what matters to you.
That might include:
- High-powered reading glasses to help with labels or menus
- Portable or desktop digital magnifiers for reading and hobbies
- Telescopic and microscopic glasses designed for tasks like watching TV, recognizing faces or reading at various distances.
These are highly specialized glasses that go beyond what standard lenses can do, offering powerful magnification to support specific needs. For some, wearable devices using smart technology can enhance vision in real time.
We also provide evaluations for bioptic driving, which may help eligible patients get back behind the wheel safely and legally.
When additional training or support is needed, whether it’s learning new devices, improving mobility or adapting at home, we’ll connect you with trusted professionals to help you move forward with confidence.
Our goal is simple: to help you make the most of your vision so you can keep doing the things you love.
“Dr. Zampella and Mrs. Maggie have been a Godsend for my son who has been diagnosed with RP. Amazingly, one single visit with them made his confidence soar. They were extremely knowledgeable, showing him devices and methods he could use to help him navigate through daily life. Mrs. Maggie was the first person he met that had RP like him and it made such an impact on him with her positive attitude and truly understanding what he is going through. We drove almost 2.5 hours to Taylor, MS to meet them and we will continue to make that drive for the invaluable support and knowledge they provide to my son!”
